Google recently decided to explore a new category, the mid-range premium segment with the launch of the Pixel 3a devices. The 3a's inherits some of its features from its costlier siblings, the Pixel 3 devices, like the design and the camera but were paired with a mid-tier Snapdragon 670 processor in order to keep the costs low. The devices were targeted at people who are looking at a somewhat premium form factor but at a lower price point. But with a starting price of ₹ 39,999/- for the Pixel 3a all the way to ₹ 44,999/- in the Indian market, do the devices actually stand a chance in an overcrowded segment?

Another popular manufacturer that recently released its devices was OnePlus. Going against its trend of releasing a single device every 6 months or so, OnePlus went ahead and introduced two devices this time around, the OnePlus 7 Pro and the OnePlus 7. Though OnePlus 7 Pro aimed at the top end premium phone buyers, the second device, OnePlus 7, is more in alignment with OnePlus's philosophy of a top spec'ed device at a not so premium price point. The OnePlus 7 is an incremental update over the previously launched OnePlus 6T, but with current year's top of the line Snapdragon 855 paired with a 128/256 GB of UFS 3.0 storage along with 6/8 gigs of RAM, and all this comes in at a cost which is even cheaper than what its predecessor, the OnePlus 6T was launched.

Yes, you heard that right. The OnePlus 7 have been launched at a starting price of ₹ 32,999/- (for the 6/128 GB model) which undercuts the price at which the OnePlus 6T was launched.

So the question is which one should one go for?

The Pixel a's come with a quickest guaranteed OS update and with a camera borrowed straight from the premium Pixels that and is one of the best you can get in its category and beyond. Although the image and app processing speeds may not be the liking to everyone due to the lack of a top SoC and a dedicated image processor which make one think if 3a's worth the cost they demand.

On the other hand, the OnePlus 7 comes with the top of the line Snapdragon 855 processor chip paired with a 6/8 GB of RAM compared to 4 GB you get on the Pixel 3a's with the smoothest of experience when compared to any other device available in the market right now and almost equally fast OS updates. As far the camera is concerned, one may be missing out a bit but with the Google camera modules available which can easily be side loaded without rooting your devices, you sure can get the best of both worlds while saving out on almost ₹ 7000/-, which can be used to buy a nice pair of wireless headphones (would recommend the OnePlus Bullets Wireless 2 costing ₹ 5,990/- and still saving you a few additional bucks) to make up for the lack of 3.5 mm audio jack.
